What unemployment means for poor single moms
When someone is on employment, they may never realize how it is to have no job and live almost below the poverty line. In an interview with a jobless mother of 3 who requested to remain anonymous, I realized that though we all live in one world, there is a very big valley that separates the jobless and the employed folks. My interviewee has now been jobless for 4years. She cannot imagine how it feels to pick up a pay check at the end of the month. Do not be mistaken, she is a graduate at Yale university with first class honors in anthropology. According to her, she feels that she was cursed and will never get a job. In her first and second year of unemployment she sent application letters to hundreds of companies seeking a job with no success. In tears, she confessed to me that unemployment benefits help, and if it were not for the governments move to introduce it to the jobless folks, then her being a single mother, would die of poverty. Sincerely, this has been the saddest interview I ever had to do in my life.
